IBSV01 ice-breakers "Alexander Sannikov" and "Andrey Vilkitskiy" that are able to prevail 2 m ice, started work in the Arctic

According to a site "Russian navigation", 22 MW IBSV01 ice-breakers of Icebreaker 8 class "Alexander Sannikov" and "Andrey Vilkitsky" (constructed in 2018 by the Vyborg Shipyard) have started mutual work in the Arctic region.

Vessels are able to move through 2.0 m ice with 30 cm snow cover with speed of 2 kn by bow ahead or stern ahead.

Their tandem has strengthened the unique logistical scheme of all-the-year-round transportation of the Arctic oil from the terminal "Arctic Gate" to floating oil storage in the Kola Bay, from where the further deliveries of hydrocarbons to the world market by standard tanker parties are carried out.

Vessel's concept project is made by Aker Arctic Technology, technical project is made by Marine Engineering Bureau. Working-design documentation is performed by Petrobalt Design Bureau.

In January the ice-breaker "Andrey Vilkitsky" has finished voyage through the Northern Sea Route and has joined the twin vessel "Alexander Sannikov". Within the framework of the Arctic logistical scheme a task of ice breakers is providing of safe and effective work of tanker fleet in the area of the "Arctic Gate" terminal which carries out all-the-year-round shipment of oil from Novoport deposit.

Novoport is dynamically developing Arctic active of "Gazprom nefty", extraction capacity at which have grown more than by 40% for last year.

"Russian navigation" was informed in press-service of "Gazprom nefty", ice breakers "Andrey Vilkitsky" and "Alexander Sannikov" provide the safe tankers' approach to the Arctic terminal and are capable to carry out the wide spectrum of works in heavy ice conditionsб as follows: mooring operations, towage, protection of "Arctic Gate" from of ice impacts.

"The share of extraction in Arctic regions already exceeds 20% from total amount of oil extraction of our company. Development strategy till 2030 of "Gazprom nefty" foresees special attention to the development of this region. Therefore escalating logistical capacities is important for us. Presence of own ice-breakers is a guarantee of uninterrupted and effective functioning of the Arctic oil transportation scheme; that creates new prospects for the further development of oilfields in this region", - the first deputy of the general director of "Gazprom nefty" Vadim Jakovlev has noted.

"Arctic Time" is an Arctic program of "Gazprom nefty". Several oilfields are developed within this program's framework, namely Novoport oilfield, Prirazlom oilfield in Pechora Sea (oil extraction is carried out from marine platform "Prirazlomnaya") and Messoyakhsk oilfield, the most northern continental one in Russia. The unique project of all-the-year-round transportation of the extracted oil through Northern Sea Route was realized.

IBSV01 vessels "Alexander Sannikov" and "Andrey Vilkitskiy" are the most powerful (from ones put into operation) in the world diesel ice-breakers.

Vessels are intended for ice conveyance of tankers, assistance during mooring and cargo operations, rescue operations, towage, firefighting, participation in oil spill operations.

Vessels' main particulars are as follows: length overall is about 121.7 m, breadth overall is about 26.0 m, depth is 11.5 m, draught is 8.0 m.

Russian Maritime Registry of Shipping class is KM Icebreaker8 AUT1-ICS FF1WS DYNPOS-2 EPP ANTI-ICE ECO SDS<12 Winterization(-50) Tug.

Main vessel's purposes are as follows:

• tankers' conveyance to cargo region of oil export terminal (marine mooring system) at ice conditions;
• security support during mooring and loading of tankers.

Moreover, vessel is able to carry out auxiliary operations, as follows:

• protection of arctic oil export terminal (marine mooring system) from impacts from ice formation and ice floes movement;
• rescue operations in the region of Artic oil export terminal (marine mooring system) and assistance to vessels at ice conditions and on open water at seas of Beaufort force 7;
• search and rescue of people on the open water at seas of Beaufort force 5, and also at ice conditions;
• towage of vessels and marine floating structures at ice conditions and on open water;
• delivering and transportation of small parties of deck cargo or operational staff to arctic oil export terminal (marine mooring system);
• firefighting of floating and coastal objects accessible for approaching from the sea side;
• support of underwater engineering diving operations at depths of up to 12 meters;
• remote automated management of arctic oil export terminal (marine mooring system);
• participation in oil spill response operations, both on open water and at ice conditions as the equipment's carrier and collector of water and oil products, obtained as a result of spill combating;
• temporal arrangement of rescued crews of tankers and other vessels.
