Trip of dry-cargo vessel "Sergiy Skadovskiy" to repair base at the port of Sevastopol was successfully completed

On March, 6, 2008 trip of dry-cargo vessel "Sergiy Skadovskiy" to repair base at the port of Sevastopol was successfully completed. Vessel's hull constructions were damaged during sailing in Azov Sea ice field.

Vessel was damaged during trip within convoy consisted of 10 vessels which sailed from the port of Mariupol to the Kerch channel with ice-breaker "Kapitan Bilousov" and sea tug-boat "Portovik". Crew of "Sergiy Skadovskiy" consisted of 13 persons, motorship transported 3150 tons of grain.

On January, 7, 2008 in 7:45 motorship "Sergiy Skadovskiy" arrived from Mariupol to Beyrut with cargo of grain. Vessel was the last one within convoy consisted of 10 vessel in front of which ice-breaker "Kapitan Bilousov" and tug-boat "Portovik" were.

By evening of January, 18, strong east wind began and ice field in front of "Sergiy Skadovskiy" was formed. As a result vessel's hull was strongly pressed and the dent was formed on the port side, most part of which was considerably under waterline. Vessel began to suffer a list to PS. Tug-boat moored to the going down vessel and crew escaped from "Sergiy Skadovskiy" to the tug-boat. In 6:00 main deck was covered with water. List increased up to 9 degrees. It was decided to rescue the vessel.

Ice-breaker took forward position to Kerch channel and tug-boat began to push "Sergiy Skadovskiy" into stern. In 22:53 this convoy reached 3 mile zone of Varzovskiy buoy and then Kerch channel.

On Jannuary,20 in 7:05 tugging was completed. Vessel was grounded without heel and trim a few miles from coast.

On January, 25, "Krympodvodservis" Ltd. carried out diving inspection of grounded vessel. As a result damages of hull construction that led to the water intake were found out, as follows: at PS from fr. 115A towards fore dent was formed onto side shell under fender bar with breadth up to 1 m with height 100 - 400 mm (maximum height is in middle area); there was a transverse crack with length of 1000-1300 mm into side shell (fr. 95, PS) 300-400 mm lower than fender bar; there was a transverse crack with length about 300 mm in side shell (fr. 87, PS) 700 mm higher than bilge keel (crack is located in dent with height up to 100 mm); there was a transverse crack with length about 150 mm in side shell (fr. 70, port side) 500 mm higher than bilge keel (crack is located in dent with height up to 50 mm); there was a transverse crack with length about 150 mm in side shell (fr. 70, PS) 500 mm higher than bilge keel (crack is located in dent with height up to 50 mm); there was a transverse crack with length of 15 m in side shell (fr. 50, PS) 100 mm lower than fender bar crack is located in dent with height up to 200-300 mm); there was transverse crack in the form of L with sides of 200x200 mm in side shell (fr. 76, StB); there was a dent in side shell (fr. 40-102, starboard) up to 1.5 m lower than fender bar with height 100-400 mm.

On ship-owner demand ERS MEB specialists worked out the actions of getting the ship off and the project of transferring from grounding place to the port of Kerch where cargo unloading was supposed to carry out. Transferring project was approved by RS Head Office.

Strength analysis of damaged vessel showed that hull in weak sections (all longitudinal hull members that lost steadiness or were destroyed by cracks were excluded from calculation model) satisfied all IISP class requirements (permissible wave's height is of 6.0 m). Analysis was carried by Marine Engineering Bureau taking into consideration all received damages. Additional weight in cargo hold (due to sea water income and grain cargo become wet ) was taken into consideration.

On February, 6, after water income elimination in accordance with given recommendations, vessel was got off and proceeded on her own to the berth at the port of Kerch, where the cargo was unloaded.

It was decided to transfer the vessel to repair base at the port of Sevastopol to correct received damages.

MEB specialists checked possibility of vessel transferring from the port of Kerch to the port of Sevastopol and worked out project of one-time trip, approved by RS Head Office.

Strength analysis was carried out taking into consideration real filling of vessel store tanks and ballast tank filling level due to MEB recommendations.

Voyage though sea was carried with the restrictions as follows:

- permissible 3% probability wave height of 3.5 m;

- maximum distance from coast of 10 miles.

On March, 5 in 17:00 "Sergiy Skadovskiy" departed from the port of Kerch accompanied by tug-boat and on March, 6 in 12:00 safely arrived to the port of Sevastopol.
