Volga Shipping Company, including the new RSD44 dry cargo vessels of the "Heroes of Stalingrad" type, transported 8.2 million tonnes of cargo

According to the press service, during the navigation period of 2020 Volga Shipping Company's vessels (Yury Gilts, managing director) including new dry cargo vessels of "Heroes of Stalingrad" type RSD44 and "Neva-Leader" type RSD49 project transported 8.2 million tons of cargo along the inland waterways of Russia. Most of the shipments were exports.

In total amount of cargoes handled by Volga Shipping in the period of river navigation in 2020, there were 3.2 mln tons of grain cargoes (39% of the total), more than 1.5 mln tons of broken stone products (19%), 1.4 mln tons of sulfur (17%), 0.9 mln tons of liquid bulk cargoes (11%), 0.8 mln tons of metal (10%). Around 1 mln tonnes of roundwood and other bulk cargoes (salt, granulated slag, etc.) were transported. In addition, the shipping company has made 25 voyages with project cargo and oversized equipment during the current year.

Exports made up the bulk of shipments - over 6 million tonnes or 73% of the total volume of cargo transported through GDP. The main export items are grains, metal, granulated sulphur and oil products.

"This year we have seen an increase in the wheat harvest in central Russia," notes Yuri Gilz, managing director of Volga Shipping Company. - Such good agricultural performance has certainly had a positive impact on the shipping company's orders, both for GDP and international destinations. At the moment, we are gradually summing up the results of the outgoing year and we forecast that the indicators of total shipments will exceed 15 million tonnes".

It should be noted that during the 2020 river navigation season, the Volga Shipping fleet operated throughout the European part of Russia: in the North-Western, Central, Volga, Azov-Don and Kamsky basins with access to the coastal waters of the Baltic, Black and Caspian Seas.

The lead dry cargo vessel of the RSD44 project, "Kapitan Ruzmankin", was put into service in May 2011 and the tenth vessel, "Kapitan Kanatov", in April 2012. The decision to name the vessels after the captains of the Volga Shipping Company who died in the Battle of Stalingrad was made in the year of the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. In 2012, the year of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943), all 10 vessels named after riverboat heroes were already engaged in cargo transportation on Russian rivers and lakes.

The deadweight of the RSD44 project vessel with a draught of 3.60 m in the river is about 5543 tons, and with a draught of 3.53 m in the sea - 5562 tons. The deadweight of RSD44 in 3.60 m river draft is about 100 tons higher than that of RSD59, and construction costs are lower (they are lighter in weight and simpler in terms of class requirements).

The RSD44 has an overhead dimension in ballast of only 5.4 metres in ballast (even less in cargo), which will allow it, unlike all other bridges, to pass under the Neva River, under the Rostov Railway Bridge without opening them. As a result, the vessel will save waiting time for the queue to open the bridges, which is up to 20 days per navigation period.

The lead vessel of the RSD49 series, "Neva-Leader 1", was put into service on 26.11.12 and the seventh, "Neva-Leader 7", on 23.12.13.

The builder is the Nevsky Shipyard.

The project RSD49 was designed by the Marine Engineering Bureau.

RSD49 vessels refer to the "Volga-Don Max" type due to MEB internal classification. They have maximum possible dimensions for Volga-Don canal. Vessels of the series can be operated for transportations of general, bulk, timber, grain and large-sized cargoes, dangerous goods of 1.4S, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, 9 classes of IMDG Code and cargoes of category B of BC Code. Sailing regions are Mediterranean, Caspian, Black, Baltic, White, North Seas, including voyages around Europe and to Irish Sea in winter.

RSD49 vessel's feature is a big middle hold of 52 m long as diversity from all other "Volga-Don Max" type projects designed by MEB. This hold allows to transportation of large-sized cargoes in direct voyages from Europe to Caspian Sea; such point should significantly increase economic effect of vessels' operation.

Vessel was designed for Russian Maritime Register of Shipping class notation of KM Ice2 R2 AUT1-C.

With characterized draught of 3.6 m in Volga-Don canal deadweight is about 4520 t, maximal deadweight in the sea with draught of 4.70 m is of 7143 t. Overall length is of 139.95 m, overall breadth is of 16.70 m, breadth without side fenders is of 16.50 m, depth is of 6.00 m. Summarized capacity of cargo holds is of 10920 cub. m.
