4 MW multifunctional MPSV07 rescue vessel (MASS) of Arctic navigation "Spasatel Karev" is towing the M/V "Sparta III" to the port of Arkhangelsk

According to the communications department of FSUE "Atomflot", on 08.01.21 the Marine Operations Headquarters of FSUE "Atomflot", with the participation of the 4 MW multifunctional MPSV07 rescue vessel (MASS) of Arctic navigation "Spasatel Karev", completed the operation to withdraw the M/V "Sparta III" blocked in the Yenisei Gulf. At present, 4 MW multifunctional MPSV07 rescue vessel (MASS) of Arctic navigation "Rescuer Karev" is towing M/V "Sparta III" to the port of Arkhangelsk.

"On 15.12.20 representatives of the container vessel's "Sparta III" and tugboat's "Kigoriak" shipowners approached FSUE "Atomflot" with a request to assist in the withdrawal of vessels from the Yenisei Gulf, says Leonid Irlitsa, First Deputy General Director - Director for Shipping of FSUE "Atomflot" - The M/V and the accompanying icebreaking tug could not independently continue to move along the previously laid channel in the Yenisei Gulf due to the extensive hummocks formed during the formation of fast ice. The thickness of ice in the fast ice reached 70 centimeters".

At the time the shipowners applied, atomic icebreakers "Yamal", "Taimyr" and "Vaigach" were operating in the water area of the Northern Sea Route under long-term contracts. The management of FSUE "Atomflot" held consultations with partners on the possibility of diverting one of the icebreakers to assist the blocked ships. On 24.12.20, after the completion of negotiations, the atomic icebreaker "Vaigach" left the Gulf of Ob in the direction of Yenisei Gulf.

One of the difficulties in navigating container vessel "Sparta III" in ice conditions was its bulb. This bow of the vessel changes the direction of the water throughout the vessel's hull and reduces drag. But this design feature did not allow the ship to be towed by the "close-up" method.

"Before the start of the escort, the atomic icebreaker "Vaigach" made a roundabout of "Sparta III" container vessel, and then renewed and expanded the previously laid channel. After that the atomic vessel took the ship on a short tug, - notes Leonid Irlitsa. - Owing to the professionalism of the captain of the atomic icebreaker "Vaigach" Alexander Scriabin and the well-coordinated actions of the crew of atomic vessel, the operation was completed in a short time ".

On 27.12.20 the atomic icebreaker "Vaigach" of FSUE "Atomflot" removed the container ship "Sparta III" and the icebreaking tug "Kigoriak" from the hummock area. The duration of the operation was nineteen hours. After that, the atomic icebreaker returned to work under contract obligations. The container vessel "Sparta III" and the icebreaking tug "Kigoriak" headed for the exit from the Yenisei Gulf for further way to the port of Arkhangelsk. But a day later, they again could not continue their movement on their own.

In the north of the Yenisei Gulf vessels collided with ice fields that blocked their movement. In addition, the steering control of M/V "Sparta III" was out of order. The icebreaking tug managed to get out on lighter ice and leave the area, and the vessel again remained to wait for help.

On 1.01.2021 "Vaigach" atomic vessel and "Admiral Makarov" diesel icebreaker, which are under the operational control of Rosatomflot, approached "Sparta III" M/V.

Atomic vessel started laying the canal, and the icebreaker took the vessel in tow.

On 02.01.2021 the caravan set out on lighter ice west of Bely Island in the Kara Sea. The atomic icebreaker "Vaygach" returned to work under contract obligations.

The icebreaker "Admiral Makarov" was joined by the 4 MW multipurpose MPSV07 rescue vessel "Spasatel Karev" for Arctic navigation.

They continued to tow the ship together. The coordination of the actions of the vessels was carried out by the Headquarters of Marine Operations of FSUE "Atomflot". On 08.01.2021 the diesel icebreaker "Admiral Makarov" completed its pilotage in the Barents Sea.

Currently, 4 MW multipurpose MPSV07 rescue vessel "Spasatel Karev" for Arctic navigation is towing the "Sparta III" M/V to the port of Arkhangelsk.

"Spasatel Karev" is an unique multifunctional rescue vessel by her equipment and available technology; she was built at Russian shipyard due to the order of FSUC "State Customer Management of Maritime Transport Development Programs" of the Federal Agency of Maritime and River Transport of the Russian Federation.
