Celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet, the oldest trawl fleet in Russia
On 09 July 2021, Arkhangelsk hosted celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet, the oldest trawl fleet in Russia. The Marine Engineering Bureau congratulated colleagues at ATF on their 100th anniversary. Photo sources: Arkhangelsk Oblast Government website, Youtube channel of GTRK "Pomorye". The history of the Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet begins in 1920 with the signing of a relevant decree on March 19, 1920. In the same year 12 trawlers were transferred to the Arkhangelsk trawl fleet: 6 from Arkhangelsk fisherman Bezzubikov (T-26 "Cod", T-40 "Scat"), 6 from Arkhangelsk Centrosoyuz (T-25 "Saida"). By the end of the 1970s the ATF was experiencing its peak of development with 19 vessels of the BMRT type, while not losing 39 units of steam-powered RT, including 4 units of the "Altai" type and others. On 8 July 1970 the Archangelsk Trawl Fleet was awarded a Diploma of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR for its achievements, introduction of advanced technologies and in connection with the 50th anniversary of its foundation. Since 2014, ATF has been part of the Northwest Fisheries Consortium. ATF has specialised units for ship repair, cargo transshipment and storage, and training and retraining of seafarers. The company processes fish, both on board ships and at the fish processing plant in Arkhangelsk. The company has implemented HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) individual food safety management systems on its fishing vessels, and all vessels are approved by EU and PRC authorities as suppliers of fish products to the European Union and the People's Republic of China. The cod, haddock, halibut and pollack fisheries are certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) environmental standard for sustainable fisheries. Confirming its leadership position, the Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet is the first in Russia to begin renewing its fishing fleet as part of the "Quotas Under the Keel" investment programme. On 8 September 2020 an act of acceptance - handover was signed for the lead large stern freezer trawler-processor KMT01 project Barents Sea. The head large-capacity trawler of the KMT01 project, Barents Sea, has been named Best Trawler-Processor (factory) of 2020 by Baird Maritime. Baird Maritime is one of the world's leading maritime publications. Founder of the renowned maritime news portal BairdMaritime.com, Work Boat World, Fishing Boat World, Ship World, Ausmarine and Commercial Mariner magazines as well as the leading ship broking platforms WorkBoatWorld.com and ShipWorld.com. This is the first large-capacity trawler to be built by the domestic industry in 30 years. The vessel is capable of processing up to 160 tonnes of fish per day. The conceptual design is by Skipsteknisk. The technical design of KMT01 was developed by the Marine Engineering Bureau. The builder is Vyborg Shipyard (general director Alexander Solovyov). A total of four trawlers of the KMT01 project have been ordered for Vyborg Shipyard. The second vessel Norwegian Sea was launched on 17 May 2019, the third vessel White Sea on 6 February 2020 and the fourth vessel Kara Sea is scheduled for launching in 2021. This is the first large-capacity trawler to be built under investment quotas. The Investment Projects Selection Commission has confirmed that ATF has fulfilled all its obligations and is eligible to be allocated fixed investment quotas from 2021. It is the first trawler of its size (86 metres in length) - in the Barents Sea and the Norwegian Sea cod, haddock and halibut are now harvested by smaller vessels (50-65 metres) with correspondingly lower productivity. It is a trawler that qualitatively differs from vessels in service in terms of increased power plant capacity, modern technological equipment, automation of processing and fisheries management, comfort and habitability. This is the first domestic trawler with a floating main speed (50/60 Hz), which allows the main engine speed to be lower than the standard speed when operating in trawl mode - thereby saving fuel. Equipped with the latest generation of trawl gear (single trawl and dual trawl operation simultaneously), it is capable of fishing for bottom and pelagic fish species (cod and haddock as well as sea bass and catfish) and shrimp in various fishing areas. It is a trawler with equipment for producing frozen products (100 tonnes), fillets (40 tonnes), fish oil, fish meal (60 tonnes) and a canning factory (caviar, cod liver, etc., 5,000 jars) capable of processing up to 160 tonnes of fish per day. After processing and freezing, storage of the catch is provided in a freezer hold with a capacity of about 2500 m³. Fishmeal is stored in a separate hold with a capacity of about 350 m³. The ice class of the KMT01 project trawler enables it to fish in all latitudes of the Northern Basin. According to colleagues from NWFC, the first days of fishing have already shown the significant performance advantages of the new KMT01 project concept compared to the older vessels operating nearby. We are grateful to the Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet and the Northwest Fisheries Consortium for the opportunity to work together, we have learned a lot, we are learning a lot, and we are ready to continue to work for the development of your fleet.
Happy anniversary!
