The first fishing voyage of the latest large-capacity trawler-processor of the KMT01 project "Barentsevo more" has been successfully completed

According to the MSFP, the large-capacity stern trawler "Barents Sea" of the KMT01 project by Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet (ATF, part of the North-West Fishery Consortium) was moored in the port on August 3, unloading over 1000 tons of cod and haddock, over 40 tons of fish meal and 3 tons of fish oil to the MMRF cold storage and warehouses. The fish was caught in the Svalbard Archipelago area.

"Of course, it's fantastic to operate such a vessel, with such capabilities. A new, modern trawler, it's not just the 21st century. It is space!" - Igor Virachev, captain of the trawler-processor Barents Sea, is delighted. - "In addition the vessel is very stable and not capricious. The first voyage revealed some technical shortcomings, but we will quickly fix them".

"One of the main features of the "Barentsevo more" trawler-processor project KMT01 is the ability to unload catches using a special lift via a ramp, a hinged hatch in the side of the vessel. Shore-loaders can take fish almost out of the hold, without using cranes. What's more, there is a pallet packer on board, so the frozen fish briquettes are already securely wrapped in stretch film. However, the crane is still in use. While the loaders take the fish pallets overboard, the crane driver removes the bags with fishmeal through the hatch in the forward hold. All this speeds up the unloading process.

"We have experience of working with such vessels, some Norwegian transports delivering fish to Murmansk also unload through the ramp," says Eduard Malashenkov, head of the transhipment complex at the MSFP. - "But it is the first time a domestic, and even more so, a fishing vessel with such technical capabilities comes. One can say that the work is virtually automated. There is no manual work when dockers go through the boxes with fish in the hold and load it on the pallet. The productivity of the dockers is multiplied!"

This is the first large-capacity trawler to be built by the domestic industry in 30 years.

The builder is Vyborg Shipyard (general director Alexander Solovyov).

The customer is Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet (part of NWSC).

The conceptual design is developed by Skipsteknisk. The technical design of KMT01 was developed by the Marine Engineering Bureau.

A total of four trawlers of the KMT01 project have been ordered for Vyborg Shipyard: "Barentsevo more", "Norwegskoe more", "Beloe more" and "Karskoe More". The second trawler-processor KMT01 project "Norvegskoe More" is scheduled for delivery at the end of 2021.

"Barentsevo more" project KMT01 is the first large-capacity trawler to be built within the investment quotas. The Investment Projects Selection Commission has confirmed that ATF has fulfilled all its obligations and is eligible to be allocated fixed investment quotas from 2021.

It is the first trawler of its size (86 metres in length) - in the Barents Sea and the Norwegian Sea cod, haddock and halibut are now harvested by smaller vessels (50-65 metres) with correspondingly lower productivity.

It is a trawler that qualitatively differs from vessels in service in terms of increased power plant capacity, modern technological equipment, automation of processing and fisheries management, comfort and habitability.

This is the first domestic trawler with a floating main speed (50/60 Hz), which allows the main engine speed to be lower than the standard speed in trawl operating mode - thereby providing fuel savings.

The lead large-capacity trawler-processor of the KMT01 project, "Barentsevo More", has been named the best trawler-processor (fabricator) of 2020 by Baird Maritime.

Founder of the renowned maritime news portal BairdMaritime.com, Work Boat World, Fishing Boat World, Ship World, Ausmarine and Commercial Mariner magazines as well as the leading ship broking platforms WorkBoatWorld.com and ShipWorld.com.

The first days of fishing have already shown a marked performance advantage of the new concept over the older vessels in the vicinity, as colleagues from NWFK have commented.

The main purpose of the vessel: bottom trawling fishing with on-board processing of the catch and production of frozen products.

The daily output of frozen products is 100 tonnes, 60 tonnes of fish meal and fish oil, 5,000 cans of preserves and 40 tonnes of fillets.

The main fish species harvested are cod and haddock, as well as sea bass and wolffish.

Main types of products:

• decapitated and gutted fish;
• fillets;
• caviar;
• cod liver;
• fish meal;
• fish oil.

After processing and freezing, the catch is stored in a freezing hold with a capacity of about 2500 cubic meters. Fishmeal is stored in a separate hold with a capacity of 350 cubic meters.

The vessel is equipped to handle a single trawl and two trawls simultaneously.

Overall length - about 86 m;
Breadth - 17,0 m;
Depth at main deck- 6.75 m;
Depth at trawl deck- 10,1 m;
Maximum stern draft - 8.9 m.

Russian Maritime Registry of Shipping class notation is - KM Ice3 AUT1 (REF) Fishing Vessel.

The vessel is expected to operate in the North Atlantic, the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Greenland Sea.

The design speed of 15 knots is provided by a single 6,000 kW main engine running on the propeller shaft in a non-rotating nozzle.

Controllability, including when operating two trawls at the same time, is provided by a single Becker rudder with flap.

An 850 kW bow thruster is provided to improve controllability at low speeds.

Operation of the vessel's power plant is provided by two diesel generators of 900 kW and 500 kW, as well as a shaft generator of 3,200 kW. In addition, an ADG of approximately 116 kW is provided.

The hull and superstructure are of steel, the wheelhouse is of aluminium alloy. To ensure corrosion protection, in addition to paint and varnish materials, cathodic protection of the underwater part of the hull is provided, as well as zinc spraying of external surfaces of structures exposed to aggressive environment.

A stern crane with a lifting capacity of 6 t and an outreach of 15 m is available for fishing operations. For unloading work in port there is a crane in the middle part of the vessel with a lifting capacity of 3 t at 14 m outreach and a crane in the bow of the vessel with a lifting capacity of 2.5 t at 8 m outreach.

Fishing equipment (bottom trawling systems), as well as anchor mooring gear, are supplied complete with an automated control system.

The equipment of the fish processing plant consists of various types of filleting machines with a capacity of 40 tons per day, beheading and gutting machines as well as equipment for fish transport, sorting, fillet sorting, fish storage tanks, weighing tables, packing tables, etc., with a capacity of 100 tons of finished fresh-frozen products per day.
