Report "Current situation of the tug, bunkering and auxiliary fleet in Russian seaports and inland waterways"

On 20 September 2021, St. Petersburg hosted the IV International Conference on the Development of the Icebreaker and Auxiliary Fleet. The conference was organised by PortNews Media Group with the general support of Damen Shipbuilding Group.

More than 150 specialists from port fleet vessel operators, shipbuilders, design companies, shipping, agency and insurance companies, as well as classification societies and governmental customer companies, attended the event.

The Marine Engineering Bureau presented a report on "The current state of the tug, bunkering and auxiliary fleet in Russian seaports and inland waterways".

The report presents the results of a study by the Marine Engineering Bureau of statistics on the status in service, decommissioning patterns and projected composition (by project) up to 2030 of the old "Soviet" series of sea and river support, towing and bunkering vessels, based on data for September 2021.

A total of 4376 vessels were reviewed, including 30 river and river-sea icebreakers, 126 bunkering vessels, 122 track and survey vessels, 450 river port tugs, 426 sea and river-sea tugs and 3185 river tug and pusher vessels of designs built from the early 1960s to the beginning of this century.

A total of 2.570 vessels from the researched "Soviet" series are now in operation (74 vessels have been decommissioned in the two years from 2019). Based on the derived decommissioning patterns, it is expected that by 2025 there will be 1.750 vessels and by 2030 there will be 898 vessels (35% of the current number).
