The crew of the 22 MW IBSV01 project icebreaker "Alexander Sannikov" performed a rescue training of a helicopter in distress in the Gulf of Ob

According to "PortNews" news agency, the crew of the icebreaker of 22 MW Icebreaker 8 class of project IBSV01 "Alexander Sannikov" of "Gazprom Neft" company held a training session in the Gulf of Ob to rescue a helicopter in distress.

This is the first experience of Gazprom Neft's icebreaking fleet and Arctic aviation services working together to conduct a rescue operation.

According to the training plan, "Alexander Sannikov" received an alert about the loss of communication with the helicopter, located the aircraft and lifted the injured from the ice on board, where crew members provided them with first aid. The icebreaker promptly proceeded to the Arctic Gateway oil terminal, from where the people were successfully evacuated to the hospital ashore.

The 22 MW Icebreaker 8 class icebreaker of the IBSV01 project, "Alexander Sannikov", was built in 2018 by the Vyborg Shipyard (director Alexander Solovyov).

The conceptual design was created by Aker Arctic Technology and the technical design of the IBSV01 was developed by the Marine Engineering Bureau. The working design documentation was carried out by PKB Petrobalt.

The IBSV01 project vessel "Aleksandr Sannikov" is currently one of the most powerful (after the 25 MW "Viktor Chernomyrdin") diesel-powered icebreakers in the world.

Vessels are intended for ice conveyance of tankers, assistance during mooring and cargo operations, rescue operations, towage, firefighting, participation in oil spill operations.

The vessel can operate in solid ice about 2.0 m thick and with 30 centimetres of snow cover at a speed of 2 knots when moving forward both fore and aft.

Vessels' main particulars are as follows: length overall is about 121.7 m, breadth overall is about 26.0 m, depth is 11.5 m, draught is 8.0 m.

Russian Maritime Registry of Shipping class is KM Icebreaker8 AUT1-ICS FF1WS DYNPOS-2 EPP ANTI-ICE ECO SDS<12 Winterization(-50) Tug.

Main vessel's purposes are as follows:

• tankers conveyance to cargo region of oil export terminal (marine mooring system) at ice conditions;
• security support during mooring and loading of tankers.

Moreover, vessel is able to carry out auxiliary operations, as follows:

• protection of arctic oil export terminal (marine mooring system) from impacts from ice formation and ice floes movement;
• rescue operations in the region of Artic oil export terminal (marine mooring system) and assistance to vessels at ice conditions and on open water at seas of Beaufort force 7;
• search and rescue of people on the open water at seas of Beaufort force 5, and also at ice conditions;
• towage of vessels and marine floating structures at ice conditions and on open water;
• delivering and transportation of small parties of deck cargo or operational staff to arctic oil export terminal (marine mooring system);
• firefighting of floating and coastal objects accessible for approaching from the sea side;
• support of underwater engineering diving operations at depths of up to 12 meters;
• remote automated management of arctic oil export terminal (marine mooring system);
• participation in oil spill response operations, both on open water and at ice conditions as the equipment's carrier and collector of water and oil products, obtained as a result of spill combating;
• temporal accommodation of rescued crews of tankers and other vessels.
