Model tests of Arctic 25 MWt power ice-breaker at Finnish "Aker Arctic Technology" ice laboratory
Model tests of self-going model of 25 MWt power ice-breaker for FSUC "ROSMORPORT" were carried out on 25 - 28th of November, 2008 at "Aker Arctic Technology" ice laboratory (Helsinki). Vessel's ice passability and ice manoeuvrability were investigated during first step at different conditions as follows: 1. Forward running trough homogenous ice of 1.0 m thickness, escape from canal, then turning, star turning, hummocks of 8-10 m passing. 2. Forward running trough homogenous ice of 1.5 m thickness, escape from canal, then turning, star turning, hummocks of 14-16 m passing. 3. Stern ahead running trough homogenous ice of 1.0 m thickness, escape from canal, then turning, star turning, hummocks of 8-10 m passing. 4. Stern ahead running trough homogenous ice of 1.5 m thickness, escape from canal, then turning, star turning, hummocks of 14-16 m passing. Additional model tests are to be carried out for the limit conditions of the designed vessel, as follows: 5. Forward running trough homogenous ice of 2.0 m thickness, escape from canal, then turning, star turning, hummocks of 20-22 m passing. 6. Stern ahead running trough homogenous ice of 2.0 m thickness, escape from canal, then turning, star turning, hummocks of 20-22 m passing. During tests propulsion complex of ice-breaker was learned. This complex consists of two side 8.5 MWt rudder propellers and single propeller shaft in CL. New generation of high power ice-breakers is designed do of Federal Goal-Oriented Program "Development of Russian Federation transport system in 2010-2015". In accordance with RF Security Council decision FSUC "ROSMORPORT" put a direction problem for design of new generation of Arctic line diesel-electric ice-breaker basing on the uppermost modern technical ideas from maritime industry. This vessel has to include additional functions in utmost degree. Saying other words new vessel has to represent multifunction Arctic ice-breaker that would be able to provide fulfilment not only traditional tasks but also carrying out arctic scientific researches and providing different activities on arctic shelf development including navigation providing and drilling platforms work in ice conditions ensuring. Multifunction 25 MWt power artic ice-breaker is designed by "Petrobalt" Design Bureau (Georgiy Taritsa is a general director) together with Finnish ILS OY company, "Marine Engineering Bureau", "Era-Proekt" Design Bureau, Transas Inc. and other specialized organizations. Scientific support of the project is carried out by Central Maritime Scientific Research Institute, "Aker Arctic Technology" ice laboratory, Arctic and Antarctic Scientific Research Institute. Functional abilities expansion of ice-breakers due to additional equipment arrangement, new technical decisions adoption and giving new features for ice-breakers allows significantly grow their competitiveness and increase demand for this vessels' type during exploitation. The design problem stipulates that additional functions must not to eliminate or decrease ice properties of the vessel. So new ice-breaker shall be oriented towards not only traditional and absolutely grounded necessity of Arctic class ice-breakers but also towards prognosis of development and economical growth of Arctic region and North Seas areas in order to provide other tasks fulfilling. Due to specialists' opinion increasing of demand for expansion-abilities ice-breakers will provide them by job. So ice-breakers will became commercial profitable not only for ice conveyance but for some other works as follows: • towage of large-scale heavy marine objects; •crew members deliverance to rigs; • scientific expeditions personal transportation in comfort conditions of living and work onboard vessel; cargoes moving with usage of helicopters and special equipment; • works when using helicopters based on the ice-breaker and helicopters that temporary bases on the helicopter platform; • investigation of underwater construction of offshore oil rigs with help of ice-breaker's diving complex and small remote control submarine apparatus (SRSA) from it; • cargo transportation on the vessel's deck; • cargo handling operations and other works with help of high power crane equipment of ice-breakers (i.g. for preparation and carrying out of underwater pipeline arrangement, during cargoes transportation towards oil rigs, when moving heavy cargoes onto ice and other vessels; • underwater works including assistance from high capacity crane equipment, SRSA and diving complex; • oil spill combating works with usage of booms and other oil spill equipment owning by vessel; • search operations and water depth measuring works with help of side-scan floating sonar device that can be towaged by working boat from ice-breaker. Vladimir Shtrambrant (head of Fleet's building and repair Department of FSUC "ROSMORPORT"), Mikko Niini (head of "Aker Arctic Technology"), Georgiy Taritsa (general director of "Petrobalt"), Gennadiy Egorov (Prof., Sc.Dr., general director of "Marine Engineering Bureau"), Loliy Tsoy (Prof., Sc.Dr., head of CNIIMF ice technique and vessels' ice properties laboratory) took part in the tests. They all together paid attention at additional abilities of rudder propellers which provide unique technique for ice-breakers to manoeuvre through ice and to pass hummocks with help of ice "milling" by turning rudder propellers. Specialists are going to learn thorough carried out tests data such as data from future tests at Aker Arctic Technology" ice laboratory, Russian scientific centres at academic Krylov named CNII and Arctic and Antarctic Scientific Research Institute. Preliminary analyze of available now materials allows to give positive conclusion to tests carried out. Validity due to hull forms and ice-breaker propulsion complex type (based on set of investigations) was confirmed.
