Re-equipped vessel of "Volga-Don" type has been departed for the first voyage

On August, 23, 2009 dry-cargo vessel "Korall" of "Volga-Don" type (1565 prj.) departed for the first voyage after re-equipment.

The significant re-equipment was executed by "Dunaysudoservice" (Anatoly Urbansky is the director) in Ismail. The shipyard executed such kinds of work for the first time.

"Donrechflot" shipping company, which is including in "Azov-Don Shipping Co." group of companies (Mikhail Shvalev is the general director) is the ship-owner.

Re-equipment project was designed by the Marine Engineering Bureau (MEB).

After re-equipment the vessel has achieved Russian Maritime Register of shipping class notation KM L4 R2-RSN.

The re-equipment project base is idea of usage high (3.5 m taking into consideration existing coamings) continuous longitudinal hatch coamings that allow to increase standard of general strength of vessel's hull (by 112%!!!), cargo holds' capacity, tonnage in accordance with International Load Lines Convention. Existing coamings and previous upper deck were the most loaded elements that worked out their fatigue resource. These elements were located in the zone near to the neutral axis of the equivalent beam, so they were excluded from the general hull bend that allowed to save them as hull elements. Moment of inertia increase without bottom thickness increase allowed to increase bottom moment of resistance for 1.66 times. Forecastle height was increased for 1.4 m to improve sailing qualities. Moreover sides' shell between decks in aft area was mounted, so full scale poop superstructure was generated. Vessel's deadweight was increased from 4350 tons up to 5490 tons (by 1140 tons or by 26%), cargo holds' capacity increased from 6441 cub. m up to 9292 cub. m (by 2851 cub. m or by 44.1%).

Main works were made at the shipyard, as follows:

• Mounting of the new longitudinal cargo hatch coamings (height increasing of the existing ones by 2.5 m) with new main deck mounting;
• additional transverse bulkheads mounting in cargo area (there were two holds on the vessel before re-equipment, after re-equipment there are four holds). This mounting allowed to provide requirements of unsinkability for the vessel as B-60 type;
• forecastle height and length increasing;
• considerable repair of shell and frames, machines and mechanisms, gearings, electronics.

Total 350 tons of new hull's constructions were mounted and 360 tons of existing constructions were replaced.

Vessel satisfies all the requirements of International Conventions, including aft located free falling salvage boat mounting, stand-by boat and salvage rafts of required capacity mounting, emergency fire-pump with diesel gear mounting, ER and cargo holds fire systems mounting, signalization of fire detection in accommodation superstructure mounting, increasing coamings' height of doors, hatches, ventilators, air pipes etc.

Re-equipped dry-cargo vessel "Korall" has technical and economic indices that significantly exceed vessel's ones before re-equipment that allows her to be operated in the conditions of the river-sea going and sea transportations, including Black, Azov, Mediterranean Seas.

Vessel is of cargo double-screw type with 4 cargo holds, with double bottom and double sides, with forecastle and poop, with ER and accommodation superstructure located aft.

The dry-cargo vessel is assigned for transportation of the general, bulk, timber, grain and large-sized cargoes, dangerous goods and coal.

Vessel's principal dimensions:

Overall length - 138.80 m;
Breadth - 16.50 m;
Depth - 5.50 m;
Draught (river/sea) - 3.60/3.84 m;
Deadweight (river/sea) - 4800/5490 t;
Hold's number - 4;
Cargo holds capacity - 9292 m³;
Ballast tanks capacity - 3166 m³;
Ballast draught - 2.87 m;
Hatch covers are of piggy-back type.

Dry-cargo vessel "Korall" became the next vessel of "Volga-Don" type (belongs "Donrechflot" company) that was re-equipped with hull strength increasing and load carrying capacity rising while summer freeboard draught becomes 3.84 m.
