Keel of lead multipurpose dry-cargo vessel of DCV36 project was laid down

On November 16, 2009 keel of lead multipurpose dry-cargo vessel of DCV36 project with deadweight about 5030 tons was laid down for Universal Cargo Logistics Holding.

Management company "Management of Transport Assets", North-West Steamship Company, Volga Shipping Company; Marine Ports of St.-Petersburg, Tuapse and Taganrog, VF Tanker, Nevsky Shipbuilding and Repairing Yard and some other assets are included in the holding.

Vessel's series is building at Chinese yard Qingdao Hyundai Shipbuilding Co.,Ltd (Qingdao city).

Vessel's project is designed by the Marine Engineering Bureau.

Unlike previous dry cargo vessels series built for the holding, new project was a seagoing vessel of unrestricted sailing region from the very beginning. This project has corresponding safety factor, thickness of hull elements and main engines capacity.

DCV36 prj. is of striking innovation character type. Deadweight exceeding 5000 t for present-day single hold dry cargo vessel with calculated length less than 85 m was reached for the first time.

DCV36 prj. vessel is assigned for transportation of general, solid bulk, scrap, grain, coal, timber, heavy and large-sized cargoes, ISO 20' and 40' containers with height up to 9.5' (including ref containers), dangerous goods of 1.4S, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, 9 classes of IMDG Code and cargoes of category B of BC Code. High ice category Ice3 allows to work in Baltic and White Seas in winter.

Russian Maritime Register of Shipping class notation of the project is of KM Ice 3 AUT1.

Vessel is steel single-deck motor one of unrestricted sailing region with single cargo hold, single screw, with forecastle and poop, with deck-house and engine-room located aft, with a double bottom and double sides in the cargo area, with removable grain bulkheads, with bulb fore and transom aft ends, with hatch covers of "folding" type, with bow thruster.

Overall length is of 89.96 m, calculated length is of 84.89 m, breadth is of 14.5 m, depth is of 7.5 m, Summer freeboard draught is of 6.40, deadweight for this draught is of 5026 t.

Cargo hold is designed of the box-shaped smooth-wall type, convenient for carrying out the freight works and placing a cargo without stowing. The cargo hold's sizes are of 60.0x11.50x9.20 m; that ensures placing 3 tiers of 9.5' containers or large-sized cargoes. Cargo holds capacity is of 6230 cub.m.

Double bottom is designed for distributed load intensity of 14.0 t per sq.m and for bucket grab usage.

Original arrangement of ballast tanks with cross-flows provides fulfillment of SOLAS requirement due to probability index.

Specialists from Digital Marine Technology created vessel's hull with cylinder part of 0.46L length. Aft end forms (transom) is optimized for providing water flow towards controlled pitch propeller (CPP); fore end's form was designed according to vessel's ice operation and sailing at conditions of limit roughness due to class notation restrictions.

Vessel's movement is provided by single controlled pitch propeller. Number of blades is 4, propeller diameter is of 3400 mm. Drive to the propeller is of mechanical type from the main engine through the reduction gearbox.

Vessel's movement control is carried out by streamlined pendant balanced rudder on flange which is placed in CL. Rudder blade's area is of 8.35 sq.m, mean height is of 3.74 m. The steering gear ensures putting rudder over from 35° on one side to 35° on the other side at maximum ahead speed and at corresponding draught. The steering gear ensures putting rudder over from 35° on one side to 30° on the other side within not more than 28 sec in such condition. For operating with rudder blade the rotary electro-hydraulic steering engine (rotational moment of 64 kNm) is installed.

Ship steel of categories D and A with a yield limit of 235 MPa and category D32 with a yield limit of 315 MPa was accepted for basic hull constructions. The upper part of uninterruptible longitudinal coamings is made from ship steel of category D32 with a yield limit of 355 MPa. Elements of poop and forecastles decks constructions such as of deckhouse one are made from ship steel of categories D and A.

Vessel's hull has double bottom, double sides, upper deck with 0.8B width opening, uninterruptible longitudinal hatch coamings with height of 2.95 m. This longitudinal hatch coamings are arranged in the plane of longitudinal hold's bulkheads.

Vessel's hull is design for Ice3 ice category for operation in Baltic and White Seas during whole year. Hull's theoretical forms, ice passability and hull's strength, main engine capacity fully satisfy the new requirements of Finnish-Swedish Ice Regulation.

Proceeding from results of resistance calculation methods medium-speed diesel MAK 8л25я was chosen as main engine. This diesel has maximum specification continuous capacity of 2640 kW with speed of 750 rpm. Main engine use heavy fuel oil with viscosity of 380 cSt.

Heavy fuel stores are placed in deep-tanks in area of the ER fore bulkhead.

The dry cargo vessel's electric plant consists of single shaft generator with capacity of 292 kW, also of two diesel-generators with capacity of 2x180 kW and single emergency diesel-generator with capacity of 85 kW. Generators' driving motors work on diesel fuel.

Autonomy is of 25 days.

For improvement of vessel's controllability at low speeds, during passing narrow waters and mooring the 170 kWt capacity bow thruster of the "screw in a tube" type with a fixed-pitch propeller (FPP) is foreseen.

Ballast-bilge system is assigned for intaking and discharging ballast water. This system is served by two electric centrifugal self-priming pumps with capacity of 200 cub.m/h each. Also two ejectors with capacity of 40 cub.m/h each are installed. Simultaneously work of this equipment allows to discharge all ballast for less than 8 hours.

Control of the vessel, main power unit, CPP and bow thruster, radio navigation equipment is implemented from the united console at the wheelhouse. Control of the vessel may be also implemented from side consoles. Automated control system foresees control of the vessel from wheel house without a permanent watch in Engine Room.

For crew accommodation (10 persons) 2 single block-cabins and 8 single cabins with individual sanitary unit and shower are provided. Double cabin for students and single cabin for pilot are foreseen. Total number of persons' places onboard is 13.

Due to the Korean contract UCL Holding has to receive the first vessel in March of 2010.

Korean company is going to build ten multipurpose seagoing dry-cargo vessels of DCV36 project with deadweight about 5030 tons at own shipyard in China.
