Prof. Schneekluth wake equalizing duct is installed for decreasing fuel consumption for the first time in domestic practice


On 09.11.11 wake equalizing duct (WED) was installed onto DCV36 vessel "Agat" at the Istanbul Shipyard dock (Tuzla, Turkey). Aim of WED installation is to decreasing fuel consumption. Wed was installed first time in domestic practice.
 
During trials of the head vessel of the series "Ametist" speed was of 12.8 kn in ballast condition while ME load was of 90%. This result corresponds to speed of 12.1 kn for fully load vessel. Nature test fully confirmed prognostic CFD modeling calculations; expected speed value was of 12.7 kn for 90% ME load.
 
WED is an energy-keeping gauge proposed by Prof. Schneekluth in 1985. WED is assigned to flatten out velocity field of nominal wake. Design of this gauge was worked out by German firm "Schneekluth Hydrodynamik". This firm produced WED gauges for all DCV36 series.
 
WED installation on the DCV36 vessels was introduced by specialists of Marine Engineering Bureau and MDT firm in 2008 in order to decrease fuel consumption (and speed increase for 0.2 kn in lfull load or ballast condition).
 
Ground of WED usage reasonability and defining of their optimal placing relative to screw were carried out by specialists from 2nd department of CNII named for academic A.N.Krylov under direction of Prof. Grigoriy Kanevskiy. A set of tests was fulfilled, as follows: towing and self-running tests of vessel's model without WED for ballast and fully loading conditions, self-running tests of the model with WED varying angle between WED and CL, self-running tests of the model with WED at optimal place.
 
Thanks to tests it was proofed that WED usage increase hull-efficiency factor, same time propulsion coefficient increases for 6% for full loading case and for 7% for ballast loading.
 
When defining optimal WED placing then required power for DCV36 prj. vessel decreases for about 5% for full loading condition and for 6.5% for ballast loading condition with keeping assign speed.
 
Holding VBTH is a customer which ordered vessels' series of DCV36 prj. International transport group Universal Cargo Logistics Holding is a majority stockholder of VBTH holding. Universal Cargo Logistics Holding consolidates a group of Russian navigation (North Western Shipping Company, Volga Shipping Company, VF Tanker etc,), stevedoring and shipbuilding companies (Nevskiy Shipyard, Oka Shipyard, Borremphlot etc.).
 
Vessel's project (DCV36) is designed by the Marine Engineering Bureau.
 
Unlike previous dry cargo vessels series, which have been built for the holding according to the RSD44 and RDS49 projects, DCV36 project was a seagoing vessel of unrestricted sailing region from the very beginning. This project has corresponding safety factor, thickness of hull elements and main engines capacity.
 
DCV36 prj. is of striking innovation character type. Deadweight exceeding 5000 t for present-day single hold dry cargo vessel with calculated length less than 85 m was reached for the first time.
 
Proceeding from results of resistance calculation methods (cruising speed of 12 kn was achieved) medium-speed diesel MAK 8M25C was chosen as main engine. This diesel has maximum specification continuous capacity of 2640 kW with speed of 750 rpm. Main engine use heavy fuel oil with viscosity of 380 cSt.
 
Keel of second vessel of the series "Agat" (building No. QHS-302) was laid down on 03.12.09. She was launched on 15.06.10 and put into operation on 27.01.11.
