12th International Symposium on Practical Design of Ships and Other Floating Structures (PRADS 2013) was held in Changwon, Gyeongnam, Korea in period of October 20-25, 2013.
 
PRADS is considered as the "number 2" by the significance in the informal rating of the world shipbuilding scientific conferences after the ISSC. ISSC is the official vessels and marine structures design conference.
 
Several official persons were invited to the solemn opening of the Symposium, as follows: Oi-Hyun Kim (CEO of Hyundai Heavy Industries and Chairman Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association), Chull Yun Kim (Executive Vice President & CTO of Samsung Heavy Industries), Jin-Lae Cho (Vice Governor of the Gyeongnam provincial government).
 
Some official persons from shipbuilding industry had speeches during the CEO session, as follows: Young Kee Chon (Chairman & CEO of Korean Register of Shipping), Richard Sadler (CEO and Executive Director of Lloyd's Register, Carlos Guedes Soares (Professor of Technical University of Lisbon and President of ISSC), Young-Sik Jang (Senior Vice President of Hyundai Heavy Industries), Hang-Sup Urm (Executive Director of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering), Sung Soo Shin (Business Advisor of STX Offshore & Shipbuilding), Todd Grove (Deputy of General Director and Technical Director of American Bureau of Shipping).
 
More than 500 scientists took part in the PRADS 2013 Conference; they came from different countries, as follows: Italy, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, France, Egypt, Albania, Israel, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, USA, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium. Totally 165 reports were presented.
 
Specialists from Marine Engineering Bureau presented two reports:
 
1. Investigation of Tanker's hull with Very High Block Coefficient. Authors are G. V. Egorov, I.A. Ilnytskyi, S.N. Baskakov, B.N. Stankov;
 
2. Casualty risk investigation for hulls of inland vessels and river-sea going vessels. Authors are A.G. Egorov and A.E. Nilva.
 
Both reports aroused interest among the participants of the Symposium. Particularly difficult for colleagues is to imagine that the tanker (self-propelled vessel) of RST27 project may have a hull with a record for the world shipbuilding block coefficient of 0.936, and she was built really by a large series (i.e. there is not a virtual 3-D model).
 
International Symposium on Practical Design of Ships and Other Floating Structures (PRADS) has 36 years history, starting from the first Symposium PRADS, which was held in Tokyo in 1977.
 
Symposiums of PRADS were held every three years starting from 1989. In Tokyo (1977), Tokyo / Seoul (1983), Trondheim, Norway (1987), Varna (1989), Newcastle (1992), Seoul (1995), Hagge, The Netherlands (1998), Shanghai (2001), Lubeck-Travemunde, Germany (2004), Houston, USA (2007), Rio de Janeiro (2010).
 
Marine Engineering Bureau has participated in work of PRADS since 2001.
 
Copenhagen, Denmark was chosen as the next place of PRADS holding in 2016.
