Multifunction MPSV07 salvage vessel "Spasatel Kavdeikin" took part in the international SAR exercise "Barents 2014"

Website of the Rosmorrechflot informed that multifunction MPSV07 Arctic 4MW salvage vessel "Spasatel Kavdeikin" took part in the international SAR exercise "Barents 2014".

"Spasatel Kavdeykin" is a unique multifunctional salvage vessel by her equipment and available technology; she was built in 2013 by Nevskiy Shipyard (Russia) by order of FSUC "State Customer Management of Maritime Transport Development Programs" of the Federal Agency of Maritime and River Transport of the Russian Federation. Vessel was built in behalf of FBE SMPCSA. 3 vessels of the "Spasatel Karev" type are the biggest and the most significant vessels nowadays built at the expense of funds of the Federal Target Program for the Development of transport system of Russia for 2010-2015 years. The fourth vessel is being built now.

Vessel's project was designed by Marine Engineering Bureau.

International exercise "Barents 2014" concerning search and rescue of people who are in distress at sea and oil spill combat were carried out in the Barents Sea in the region of Varanger fiord (Norway).

Exercise "Barents" takes place every year in Russia or Norway in turn. This year Norwegian side headed the exercise. The exercise was organized and effected by marine rescue coordination center (MRCSC) Murmansk together with United MRCSC of North Norway.

The following forces took part in the exercise:

MRCSC Murmansk;

North branch of SMPCSA - multifunction MPSV07 4MW salvage vessel "Spasatel Kavdeikin", salvage boat / booms handler "Marcab", diving boat "Vodolaz Pechkurov".

FBSE "Northern salvage expeditionary group" - marine salvage vessel "Mikula";

Aviation of the Red Banner Northern Fleet - helicopter Mi-8 and aircraft IL-38;

Murmansk Control Center of Air Traffic;

Border Department of Federal Security Service at Murmansk region - coastguard vessel;

Radio station of Murmansk trawl fleet;

Meteorological Office of Murmansk region;

United MRCSC of North Norway;

Norwegian Coastal Administration - vessels NSO Crusader, Kraft Johanssen, Hornoya, Else-K, Los 115; oil spill localization aircraft B350ER; Varder Radio station; Varder VTS (Vessels Traffic Service);

Norwegian Coast Guard - vessels Harstad, Farm; helicopter Sea King (330th air squadron);

Maritime patrol guard - airplane Orion P3.

According to the exercise script two vessels collided. One of the vessels was tanker with 2000 t of oil products. There was a hull breach in the tanker's hull and fire on the second vessel. The crew of each vessel was 20 people. The crew left the tanker because of flood threat. As for the second vessel it was necessary to help crew to combat the fire and to rescue people from smoke-filled compartments. North Norway JRCC received the distress signal, informed vessels in distress area and request Murmansk MRCSC for help. Murmansk MRCSC sent readiness salvage vessels and vessels from the distress area to the accident point.

Exercise conditions were maximum closed to real.

Damage party was put onboard the fired vessel, crew members were evacuated, and people from smoke-filled compartments were rescued. The fire was brought under control by fire-fighting system of the salvage vessels "Spasatel Kavdeykin" and "Mikula". Other civil and navy vessels took part in searching the tanker crew that had left the vessel. All dummies were found in spite of that visibility at the exercise area was not more than 150-300 meters.

Specialized vessels of Russia and North Norway participated in oil spill combat. Murmansk Meteorology Centre used the program for oil spill movement forecasting with accounting meteorological conditions in the area.

Exercise was effected successfully, all aims were worked out.

Next exercise "Barents-2015" will be headed by Russian side.
