ICV51 arctic 45 MW container vessel for the Northern Sea Route with a capacity of 3000 TEU is presented



Concept of the ICV51 arctic 45 MW container vessel for the Northern Sea Route (NSR) with a capacity of 3000 TEU was presented at a meeting of Scientific and technical council of CSRI of Marine Fleet on November 10, 2015 in St. Petersburg.
 
Concept's development was carried out by JSC CSRI (researches, including study of operation models for container vessel at NSR depending on loading degree, type of icebreaking service, type of vessel's fuel; preparation of comparative technical-economic calculations, definitions of optimum characteristics of vessel's basic variant, the technical-economic justification of concept) together with Marine Engineering Bureau (preliminary and technical projects) as a part of scientific research by request of RosMorRechflot of the RF Ministry of Transport.
 
A number of high-ranking men took part in the workout of the meeting headed by the General Director of the CSRI Sergey Buyanov, as follows: Alexander Olshevskiy (FSUE Northeren Sea Route Administration), Vladimir Dmitrievskiy (OJSE Murmansk Shipping Company), Vladimir Losev (Represntative of the Murmansk Region in St. Petrsburg), Dmitriy Krutov (FBOL), Lev Nikulin (SCF Unikom), Sergey Sereda (SCF Arctic), Gennadiy Egorov (Marine engineering Bureau).
 
The ICV51 arctic container vessel of unrestricted navigation area is a single deck motor-electric vessel with 5 cargo holds, with forecastle and poop, with lowered aft mooring deck, with living deck-house and ER located aft, with 3 aft full-turn Azipod rudder propellers, with double bottom and double sides, with ice-breaking fore end and transom aft end, with stern crinoline with cutout for vessel pushing, with pontoon type hatch covers (removing ones), with fore bow thruster.
 
The ICV51 container vessel is intended for the whole-year transportation of 20, 40 and 45 ft. ISO containers of 8.5 and 9.0 ft. height, including refrigerating ones through high-latitude waters of the Northern Sea Route.

Ice-passing capability of the new concept is not less than 2.1 m for head running as well as for astern running. Escape from own canal and half-round turn by "star" method are provided.
 
Fore contains enhanced traditional ice-breaking contours (stem inclination is 25°, DWL sharpening is about 35°, flam of the 0-2 theoretical frames is 55-36°). Aft end contours are of ice-breaking type. There are aft crinoline with towage cutout for providing ability of vessel's pushing by another ice-breaker in ice. Shape and construction of crinoline are accepted for work with ЛK-60Я ice-breaker.
 
Vessel is designed in accordance with IACS Unified Interpretations for the polar type vessels with PC3 class, providing additional strength reserve compare to RS Arc 7 class. This should provide the whole-year navigation through two-year ice that contains multiyear ice. Besides the damage stability of the vessel is ensured for ice damages that may cause flooding of any two adjacent side compartments.
 
Vessel's hull is divided into 5 cargo holds in the cargo zone. It has double bottom and double sides, upper deck with opening 0.876 of the vessel breadth, uninterruptable longitudinal hatch coamings of 2.10 m height. RS Rules requirements for unrestricted navigation vessels with big deck opening are met with 10.9% reserve due to normal stress criterion and with significant reserve due to lengthening criterion for hatch cutout diagonals.
 
Upper deck, inner sides, upper part of outer sides, bottom and double bottom are designed by the longitudinal framing system, other hull parts are designed by transverse framing system.
 
High grade D36 shipbuilding steel (yield strength 355 MPa) is used as a material for main hull structures except ice belt of outer shell, longitudinal bottom stiffeners, frames, diaphragms, floors and bottom stringers in the ends; E500 steel (yield strength 500 MPa) is used for the pointed elements.
 
Side and bottom ballast tanks are foreseen for the vessel; their total capacity is 22000 cub.m. Ballast tanks provide vessel's normal trim for all specified loading cases.
 
Double bottom height is 2000 mm. Side tanks breadth is 2000 mm.
 
Power outlets for 400 refrigerator TEU and 200 refrigerator FEU are foreseen on the on upper deck. 45 ft. containers are arranged on the open deck.
 
Electric propulsion plant consists of three 15 MW full-turn Azipod rudder propellers equipped with FPP.
 
Range of sailing is 15000 miles. Vessel's autonomy is: 30 day due to fuel reserve, 90 days due to dry provision reserve, 60 days due to other provision and fresh water reserve.
 
Bow thruster of "screw in a tube" type with capacity of about 1400kW is foreseen for increasing of low speed controllability during passing locks and during mooring.
 
Main diesel-electric power plant consists of 6 main AC 11200 ekW diesel-generators (11 kV, 50 Hrz) that serve main vessel's electrical network including propulsion unit.
 
Auxiliary power plant consists of AC 1140 ekW harbor diesel-generator (HDG) (400 V, 50 Hz), AC 1081 eKW emergency diesel-generator (400 V, 50 Hz), auxiliary boiler plant consisting of two 5000 kW thermal oil heaters and six 1665 kW (85% loading) thermal oil economizers.
 
Removing pontoon type hatch covers are foreseen. Hatch cover sections are handled by shore cranes.
 
Container cell guides are arranged within cargo holds.
 
Two fore anchor-mooring winches and two aft mooring ones are foreseen for mooring operations. They provide automatic tension and unwinding of mooring ropes.
 
Anchor chain for bow anchors is of welded type grade 3, diam. 87 mm; total length is 715 m (357.5 m for both sides).
 
Gravity type davits with 40 people lifeboats are installed both sides on the poop deck.
 
Lifeboats are of, self-righting arctic closed type.
 
Equipment, gears and systems are designed and chosen in the way to provide reliable operation at outer air temperature range +35...-40°C and outboard temperature range +30...-2°C.
 
Vessel meets RS requirements due to equipment for long operation at low temperature according to notation WINTERIZATION (-40). Hydraulic oils and lubrication oils are foreseen of those types that provide reliable usage for pointed outer temperature.
 
Icing preventing class of equipment complies to ANTI-ICE notation. All outer doors are equipped with heating cable. Stairs, platforms and railing guard are equipped by heating.
 
Construction measures are taken to prevent icing of anchor-mooring equipment, life boat davits, electrical equipment, signal means, radio and navigational equipment.
 
Vessel meets enhanced ecologic requirements of RS due to notation ECO-S including requirements for control and elimination of operational emissions and discharges, and also requirements due to emergency environment pollution prevention.
 
Prevention of marine oil pollution is ensured by the following construction measures:
 
• all fuel and other storage tanks have the corresponding double-hull construction. They are located at distance not less than 760 mm from an external shell;
• during normal operational conditions, ER oily water is discharged by separate system into oily water tank providing its accumulation during autonomy term;
• oily water separator of 5.0 cub.m/h capacity is foreseen for ER oily water purification; it is supplied by the warning indicator about excess of the norm 5 ppm of oil content in discharged waters and automatic stopping device;
• the special system of accumulating and discharge of oil residues to the reception facilities is provided; this system has no direct connection with the outboard discharge outlets;
• fuel oil system contains overflow manifold and overflow tank (equipped by alarm system) in order to prevent oil spill during fuel oil bunkering and transferring.
 
Prevention of marine sewage pollution is ensured by the following construction measures:
 
• closed sewage and gray waters system is foreseen onboard; it provides accumulating these waters in storage tanks during autonomy term (there is ability of air supply to the sewage tank if storage time exceeds 6 days);
• vessel is equipped by biological unit for cleaning and disinfection of sewage;
• sewage discharge into shore or floating tanks is foreseen by two sewage pumps through the pipes with deck international socket located at both sides;
• sea disposal of the raw sewage in allowable areas (at a distance of more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land) is carried out by the sewage pump with capacity, not exceeding maximum accepted value at calculated vessel speed (not less than 4 kn);
• sewage / gray waters overboard discharge valves are located in ER. These valves are to be sealed in closed position.
 
Prevention of air pollution is provided by the following:
 
• NOx emissions from MDG and HDG diesels conform to the Tier III standard of the Regulation 13 of the Annex VI to MARPOL and the NOx Technical Code on. There are approved technical documentation for every diesel such as EIAPP Certificates;
• when operating outside NOx emissions control Areas, NOx emissions from MDG and HDG diesels conform to the Tier II standard such as requirements to the vessels with ECO-S a class notation;
• fuel oil system enables to change over MDG operating to low sulphur fuel while vessel operates within SOX Emission Control Areas regarding prevention of air pollution from ships;
• vessel's mechanisms and the equipment don't contain ozone-depleting substances.
 
The vessel is equipped by ballast waters control system.
 
Crew consists of 30 people (14 officers + 16 seamen). Additional places are foreseen for 4 repairing team, 4 cadets and 1 pilot.
 
The crew is placed in 3 improved block cabins consisting of office, salon, bedroom and toilet with bath (captain, chief mate and chief engineer), in 9 block cabins for officers consisting of salon, bedroom and toilet with shower, in 26 single cabins with individual toilet and shower. Single cabin with an individual toilet and shower is foreseen for pilot. Total number of places is 39.
 
Special room with entrance from the open deck and individual toilet is foreseen for 6 people of the Suez Canal team.
 
There is mess-room for officers, crew dining room, rest salon for officers, rest salon for crew, gym the sports hall; a gym, power lift room with training devices, sauna, the indoor pool with flowing marine water (full change of water is provided in every 2 hours by continuous supply of fresh outside water).
 
Required sanitary and hygienic rooms for crew and block of medical rooms are provided onboard the vessel:
 
• the block of working clothes rooms containing locker room, a shower and water closet;
• the block of working clothes rooms containing locker room and storm clothes drying room;
• the block of working clothes rooms containing locker room, a shower and water closet for galley staff;
• module water closet in the wheel house;;
• block of rooms laundry/drying/ironing/dirty linen storeroom/clean linen storeroom;
• isolation ward with water closet and bath (block type) equipped with escape to the open deck;
• ambulance station with the sterilizing room (storeroom);
• single person hospital.
 
Autonomy due to ecological safety corresponds to vessel's autonomy.
