Modernized Volgo-Don type vessels of 507B and 1565 projects owned by Donrechflot started work at line from port of Azov to Caucasus port

As for information from site of shipping company, Donrechflot (DRF, it is included in the Azov-Don Shipping Company) opened the 2016 river navigation on 29th of February, i.e. a month before official date of transit navigation commence. 507B dry-cargo vessel "Mikhail Andreev" that was modernized for marine navigation has departed for commercial voyage on 29.02; she run to the port of Azov for grain loading and then should run to Caucasus port. Another three modernized vessels are going to start work in the nearest time: mv "Volgo-Don 219" and mv "V.Uspenskiy" (prj. 507B) and mv "Volgo-Don 5043" (prj. 1565).

The shipping company plans to put into operation 10 tug-barge trains and 10 self-propelled vessels of river group for 2016 navigation.

DRF director of river fleet operation Oleg Sidorkin told: "Started big grain company and soft conditions of the last winter facilitate the early navigation start. Actually ice restriction in the ports of Rostov-on-Don and Azov were stopped on 09.02 yet by orders of port captains. Ice conveyance period was officially completed on 25.02 at marine ports of the Azov Sea; that allowed DRF to put river fleet into operation".

Part of the DRF river fleet continued work in the 2015-2016 Winter. For example, earlier re-classified vessel "Volgo-Don 5011" (prj. 1565) and "Volgo-Don 205" (prj. 507B) worked at line Caucasus port - roads of the Caucasus port.

507B and 1565 dry-cargo vessels owned by DRF were modernized in the first decade of XXI century due to projects of Marine engineering Bureau.

For example, on 29.08.2007 the solemn naming ceremony in honour of Akhmat Kadyrov was carried out for modernized river-sea dry-cargo vessel of Volgo-Don type (ex. "Volgo-Don 215)".

Totally 7 vessels owned by DRF were modernized due to this project in 2002-2006: "Volgo-Don 203", 211, 213, 215, 223 ("Kapitan Korchin"), 227 ("Alexander Bryukhovetckiy "), 235. Later on this modernization was continued at other 507B and 1565 vessels.

Modernization project is based on idea of usage of high continuous longitudinal hatch coamings (of 3.5 m height using existing coamings) that allow due to significant section height increase to enhance simultaneously standard of general strength of vessel's hull, cargo holds' capacity and deadweight in accordance with requirements of International Load Lines Convention.

Existing coamings and previous upper deck were the most loaded elements that worked out their fatigue resource. These elements appear now in the zone closed to the neutral axis of the equivalent beam, so they are excluded from the general hull bending; such situation allows keeping them as hull elements. Inertia moment rise of the high transverse section (while keeping bottom thickness) increased bottom section modulus.

Height of the forecastle was increased by 1.4 m for seakeeping improvement.

Rostov Shipyard "Priboy" carried out a set of works: arrangement of new longitudinal coamings (increasing heigh of the existing coamings by 2.5 m) with the following creation of the new "deck"; placing of the transvers bulkheads; increasing of the forecastle height; significant repair of hull shell and members, machinery, mechanisms, equipment and electric systems.

Totally about 250 t of new constructions were installed and 416 t of existing ones (practically 1/3 of whole hull) were replaced during modernization.

Vessel was modernized for the full compliance with all International Conventions including foreseen of emergency fire pump, emergency diesel-generator, fire-fighting systems; coamings rising for doors, hatches, air pipes etc.

Modernized 507B dry-cargo vessel has technical and economic characteristics that significantly exceed same ones before modernization; cargo carrying capacity was increased by 1.5 times and strength standard was increased by 1.4 times. Such enhancing allows this vessel to be effective operated in the conditions of the river-sea and marine transportations including through Black, Azov and Mediterranean Seas.

Vessel is single-deck tween-screw cargo one with 4 cargo holds, with double bottom and double sides, with forecastle, with engine room and living deck-house located aft.

Vessel belongs to the "Volga-Don Max" type due to MEB internal classification; her main dimensions (overall length 138.74 m and breadth 16.5 m) are determined by locks' dimensions of Volga-Don Shipping Canal (VDSC).

Vessel is optimized for work at draughts 3.20-3.77 m. The maximal deadweight is 5480 t at draught 3.771 m; river deadweight is 4938 t at draught 3.60 m.

In general, all modernized vessels were improved, their characteristics significantly increased; that provides their safe and successful operation at river-sea and marine transportations.
