7MW multipurpose MPSV06 "Beringov Proliv" rescue vessel of the Icebreaker 6 class towed the Mercury Ocean bulk carrier to a safe anchorage

On 05.11.2020 Marine Rescue Service website reported that 7MW icebreaking multipurpose MPSV06 "Beringov Proliv" rescue vessel of the Icebreaker 6 class towed the 190-meter Mercury Ocean bulk carrier with a 53 thousand tons deadweight to a safe anchorage.

7MW multipurpose MPSV06 "Beringov Proliv" rescue vessel of the Maritime Rescue Service's Sakhalin Branch continues to provide safe anchorage of the damaged bulk carrier "Mercury Ocean" after having completed the towing to the area of Cape Surkum ( Tatar Strait ).

Marine Rescue Service's divers are examining the lower part of the "Mercury Ocean" hull, rescuers are monitoring for possible fuel leakage into the strait's water area.

Bulk carrier "Mercury Ocean" (Panama flag) took the bottom near the sea terminal Boshnyakovo (Sakhalin Island). The vessel's crew could not cope with the accident on their own. The shipowner has requested assistance from the Marine Rescue Service.

7MW multipurpose MPSV06 "Beringov Proliv" rescue vessel was sent to the area of the accident. On board were three divers (diving station) and an emergency rescue unit of four rescuers. Upon arrival in the area, the captain of 7 MW multipurpose MPSV06 "Beringov Proliv" rescue vessel was appointed as the on-site coordinator.

Due to the complexity of the rescue operation, the rescue tugboat "Rubin" of the Marine Rescue Service's Sakhalin branch was sent to help from the Korsakov's seaport. The difficulty lay in the heavy workload of the bulk carrier - 12 thousand tons of coal. Before starting the removing operation of the damaged vessel from the shallows, rescuers measured depths and examined the hull of the vessel. Based on the results of depth measurements and calculations, it was decided to unload part of the cargo onto self-propelled barges and roll back the ballast tanks (pump out water from the ballast tanks). During the work, about four thousand tons of coal were unloaded and more than five thousand tons of ballast were rolled away. As a result, 7MW multipurpose MPSV06 "Beringov Proliv" rescue vessel managed to remove the damaged vessel "Mercury Ocean" from the shallows. To ensure its safety and to carry out repair work, it was decided to tow the bulk carrier to a safe anchorage. After filling the cracks in the hull of the damaged vessel, it will be towed to the nearest port for further repairs.
